The Australian Garden History Society (AGHS) was formed in 1980. It brings together people united by an appreciation of and concern for parks, gardens and cultural landscapes as part of Australia's heritage.The AGHS promotes knowledge of historic gardens and research into their history. It aims to examine gardens and gardening in their widest social, historic, literary, artistic and scientific context.

In 2001, the AGHS initiated a national Oral History Project to record individuals’ recollections of the formation and early days of the Society. Interviews were carried out by Roslyn Burge.

The second series of interviews in 2006/2007 sought a broader focus than the Society's history, interviewing people influential in the fields of garden history, horticulture, landscape architecture, heritage consultancy, garden publications and the media.
