    On 16 November 1790 Charles Grimes (1772-1858) was appointed deputy-surveyor. He arrived in Port Jackson, 21 September 1791 and was appointed surveyor-general, 13 April 1801. Grimes sailed for England in August 1803 and returned to Sydney in August 1806. In April 1808 he sailed for England and resigned as surveyor-general in July 1811. In April 1812 he was appointed paymaster with the 13th Regiment. In September 1833 he was appointed paymaster, recruiting depot at Maidstone. Finally paymaster at Chatham, in February 1836. In July 1848 Charles Grimes retired.
