  • Scope and Content
    The Holy Bible: containing the Old and New Testaments, newly translated out of the original tongues, and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, Oxford : Mark Baskett, printer to the University, 1765.
    Letter written by Canon Frederick Bennett, dated 27 April 1886. It describes how the bible came into the possession of John Leach Bennett as executor to Mrs Elizabeth Cook. Mrs Cook asserted that it accompanied Captain James Cook on all three voyages and was constantly used by him in performing Services as no Chaplains were appointed.
  • General note

    Front endpaper of cover contains a bookplate of Captain Cook as well as a label from the `Australian Museum Library, no. 7432'.
    Frontispiece has a printed label with a quote from the letter of Canon Frederick Bennett `This bible is said on the authority of Mrs Elizabeth Cook to have been used by by Captain James Cook in conducting Divine Worship throughout his three voyages. It was printed at Oxford and is dated 1765'.
