The Rev. Father Therry, 1790-1864, arrived in Sydney in 1820 with the Rev. Father Philip Conolly, the first two Roman Catholic chaplains to be authorised by both Church and State. In 1821 Father Conolly went to Tasmania and Father Therry was left alone on the mainland where he worked, particuarly with convicts and aborigines. He strove to build churches and schools and help finance these and his many charities, he dabbled in farming and stock breeding. His finances became chaotic, however and he waged a continuous war with officials for permission to carry out vital services of his ministry. In 1825 he was removed from his situation as chaplain, and not reinstated until 1837. In 1838 he was sent to Van Diemen's Land as vicar-general, where he pursued his church building policy and fell further into debt, ultimately quarrelling bitterly with Bishop Willson. From Sept. 1846 to Apr. 1847 was parish priest in Melbourne, until June 1848 parish priest at Windsor, then back to Van Diemen's Land for six years and finally in 1856 to Balmain becoming archpriest in 1858.
