The Linnean Society of New South Wales was founded in 1874 to stimulate interest in all branches of the science of natural history. The centenary of the Society was celebrated with the opening of the `Linnean Society Exhibition of Historical Material' on Friday, October 25th 1974 at the Mitchell Library. Its first president and benefactor was Sir William John Macleay. This collection includes original drawings owned by him and his cousin William Sharp Macleay, and later photographs, many (ca. 1925) of Linnean Society members.
