The great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova (1881-1931) first visited Australia in 1926 with a company of approximately 45 dancers. The tour opened in March at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne and then went to Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. The orchestra included many well-known Sydney artists. Ten thousand people welcomed her when she arrived by train in Sydney.

Pavlova returned to Australia in 1929, visiting Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Both Australian tours were under the entrepreneurial banner of the J. C. Williamson organisation.
